No 2627 Chinese porcelain tea/wine cup - Tongzhi period
Chinese porcelain cup decorated in overglaze iron red in a slightly provincial manner, in Chinese taste, with bats and shou characters symbolising longevity and good fortune. Unusually, there are 3 pontil marks on the interior base, showing where the cup was placed upside down in the kiln. There is a 4 character Tongzhi mark which is believed to be correct. It was probably made in a private kiln in Southern China since kilns in Jingdezhen had been destroyed around this time, affecting the quality of much of the porcelain and decoration.
Condition: good for age.
