Small lidded Kogo (incense holder) . This Kutani Kogo is handmade to near perfection from fine old white Kutani porcelain. It is an unusual shape – used for holding rolled incense balls. Dates to late Meiji period (1868 – 1912). Used in traditional ceremonies. Decorated in the original Kutani colours – green, black, brown or gold with a touch of blue- and showing a travelling man holding sticks in both hands. Character mark on base is the fuku mark most often used on old Kutani. The box ( tomobaku) holding the Kogo should be signed with the kiln name by the potter.
