No 2279 Japanese Ko-Imari Arita dish - 18th Century
Japanese Ko-Imari Arita 'Crane and Minogame' dish - dating to the later half of the 18th century, mid-Edo period. The rim of the dish is decorated with Shochikubai, the Three Friends of Winter. The pine, bamboo and plum are an auspicious triumvirate, symbolising a wish for long life. The centre shows a minogame, a legendary creature symbolic of happiness and also long life. The reverse of the dish is plain apart from 5 spur marks.
